Screening- Timing of Interview

Hello everyone,

I have a question about screening procedures.  Much of my role is recruiting and onboarding volunteer tutors to work with youth in drop-in programming, as well as 1:1 structured programming.  So far we've been doing this:

Background check, references
Interview with site staff

I'm curious to hear people's thoughts about the interview placement.  Would anybody recommend doing the interview before the orientation/training?  That could potentially be a lot of people to interview, as the length of the orientation can dissuade less committed applicants, but I'm concerned we're not getting enough substantive information from applicants early enough in the process.
