Clients as Volunteers

We have resident volunteers (health care setting) as well as folks that leave and want to return as volunteers.  For the latter, they are treating like "regular volunteers.  For the residents, we have an abridged process.  But they still need to complete certain steps/forms and track their hours.
Hello! I'm interested in policies that other organizations have surrounding clients serving as volunteers. Is that something you allow or don't allow? Do you have hard and fast rules or is it a case-by-case basis? Is there a period of time after which a former client can become a volunteer? Would love to know how others approach this!
